Soft sprays of budding branches climb from the ground and are carefully layered with clouds of butterflies, which come in and out of focus, creating an intriguing sense of depth. Richly coloured and delicately embroidered, they move through the composition like blossoming flowers.

The painting style in Fontaine is Chinese freehand, whereas the layout is rooted in the European aesthetic movement, harking back to the designs of the great Christopher Dresser. This combination of influences is what makes the design unique.

Fontaine is of course French for ‘fountain’, this layout being named after the delicate spray of mimosa flowers that acts as a backdrop for the boldly rendered naturalistic butterflies.
